Artist's Description
A tribute to Charles Robert Darwin ( February 12 1809 - April 19 1882) was an English naturalist. He established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestry, and proposed the scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection.
He published his theory with compelling evidence for evolution in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species. The scientific community and much of the general public came to accept evolution as a fact in his lifetime. However, it was not until the emergence of the modern evolutionary synthesis from the 1930s to the 1950s that a broad consensus developed that natural selection was the basic mechanism of evolution. In modified form, Darwin's scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences, explaining the diversity of life.

Thanks Eric. The fact it was in a photograph and the context remains a mystery adds an additional visceral layer to the art. It is in my cart. After some measurements, I will buy it.

Eric, I am considering buying this piece. Can you explain the "shh" gesture and its symbolism here?
Eric Dee replied:
I painted this from an old photograph that I had found. It offered no explanation to the finger to lips so I am left to guess myself. That said his theory of evolution pretty much threw a wrench into the majority, to include his owns wifes, belief in creationism. My guess is his pose suggested that, in certain circles, it was often wise to keep one's opinions to oneself. But I, like you, can only guess. But good question. Eric Dee
